This morning I looked at my current one with it’s browning leaves and said to Anders, “I just don’t know how to keep these plants alive!”
“Water them?” he suggested with a chuckle.
We ALL feel this way from time to time when dealing with living things. Ourselves, our family members and friends, and if you’re anything like me, maybe your plants. We also do this when making decisions regarding our education and career.
At the root of the confusion is the thought, “I don’t know.” It’s a thought that causes us to self-sabotage without even realizing that is what we’re doing.
You see, I’ve been thinking that I don’t know how to take care of a palm plant for months. Watering it regularly would have been a really good start. It also crossed my mind a couple of times that I could google, “How to take care of a palm plant.” But I kept reverting back to the thought, “I don’t know how to keep this thing alive.” When I thought that, I took no action and my plant started to die. Not once, not twice, but three times.
Stop saying, “I don’t know.”
You do know or you could know or it’s fine if you don’t, as long as you start experimenting with different options!
Next time you find yourself in a rut, notice the confusion coming from your thoughts about not knowing. They could be about your mood or your business or your child- I don’t know how to feel better, I don’t know how to make money, I don’t know what to do about this problem my child has.
Dig deep and tap into that part of yourself that does know and has always known or is really good at figuring things out. Start guessing if you have to.
When you stop telling yourself that you don’t know, a miracle occurs. You start taking action and your brain gets to work problem solving. Try it and you’ll see.
The next version of yourself is waiting for you to decide that you do know, to step out of the confusion and move forward.
